Stocking Sacks with Susan Madu of Modern Blended Quilts on Zoom
Stocking sacks are perfect smaller projects that you can complete in an afternoon. They are a great way to wrap a gift or give as a gift.
Constructing a lined bag can often be difficult and frustrating to turn the bag right side out through a small opening, not with this bag. You can personalize with your colour choices and personalize the stockings with simple hand stitching using a simple chalk transfer method.
Finished Stocking Sack is 7” wide x 5” deep x 14” high. After you make one, you will see how easily it can be sized up or down in size.
This 3 hour stocking workshop demonstrates:
- Working with directional fabrics while minimizing bulk in the bottom seam
- Simple method for constructing a lined bag with fabric drawstrings
- Chalk transfer method for personalizing the sack with Big stitch hand quilting.
Susan says "Christmas Stockings have always been a highlight for our family. This pattern grew out of a need for a stocking that would hold the contributions of many “Santa’s” to our stockings and ensuing the contents were hidden from prying eyes.
Required Fabrics
- Sack top 1 Fat Quarter
- Sack bottom 1 Fat Quarter
- Linen / name band .2 m (1/4 yard)
- Contrast (sack top & binding) .3 m (1/3 yard)
- Lining .6 m (3/4 yard)
- Fusible fleece 1 - 20" x 15" rectangle, such as Fusible Fleece 45" wide in white
- Fusible woven Interfacing 1 - 20" x 15" rectangle, such as Fusible Woven 20" wide in White

Sewing Supplies / Notions
- Thread
- Clips

- cutting mat
- rotary cutter
- rulers (8 ½” x 24” or 6” x 24” and a 12 ½” square)
Optional Notions - for personalization by hand
- Embroidery thread or pearl cotton; such as Aurfil 12 wt click here to explore some of our Aurifil 12 wt threads
- Hand sewing needle for embroidery thread
- A computer printout of the “Name” to go on the stocking which is approximately 1 ¼” high and not wider than 7”. Susan suggests a 122 pt. Arial works well for names up to 8 letters long.
Cancellation of Classes or Retreats
Should you decide to cancel your registration for an event, class or retreat, you will receive a full credit to a gift card as long as the cancellation is made more than 2 weeks prior to the class date. After that time, you will forfeit your full registration fee.
If you are unable to attend, you do have the option of finding your own replacement participant but Watergirl Quilt Co. will not assist with this or give any fee credit to the original participant. You would be required to email us the name and contact information of your replacement.
