Creative Stitching and More (2 part class)
Join Jackie Peterson as she leads you in finding out about all your machine's stitches and your own creativity.
“Creative Stitches and More.” Many people go out and buy the latest “Whiz Bang” sewing machine with oodles of stitches. They use only three or four of them. This class will help you explore the capabilities of your machine no matter what brand or age and expand your repertoire of talent. In the end you will create an original work of art and have an extremely useful resource of your machine’s stitch variations. The pictures of the stitches on your machine are not necessarily how they look in real life. Each machine is different so make a book for each machine that you have.
Day 1 - creating your stitch reference book.
Supplies
- 3 ring binder of some kind or a duo tang
- Plastic page protectors
- 1.25 yards (or more) cotton fabric ***
- 2 yards of Pellon Shape Flex Woven interfacing to stabilize the fabric, medium to heavy weight ***
- permanent fine marker or pen to record your stitches
- contrasting thread; 1 or more colours. 
*** You will be making fabric pages; you can get approximately 20 pages from 1.25 yards of fabric and approximately 20 pages from the interfacing. If you want to prepare these pages ahead of time go ahead and fuse the interfacing to the fabric and cut 8 by 10 pieces to fit in the page protectors.
Day 2 - let's get creative
Supplies
- fat quarter of batik or quilting cotton in a favourite colour; not too busy as to detract from your stitches.
- fusible stabilizer (to be fused to your Fat Quarter).
- fusible fleece (to add more dimension later on)
- treasure chest / tickle box; bring all the fun stuff you have - threads of every kind, yarns , rattail cord, ribbons rickrack, strings of beads etc almost anything you can sew over. Jackie will also bring her stash to share with you.
- embroidery threads
- hand sewing needles (large eyed and sharp)
- thimble

In our classroom at Watergirl Quilt Co, you will be able to enjoy the use of our
- tables; for your comfort, some of our individual sewing tables are mechanical Sit / Stand desks.
- chairs
- iron and ironing boards
- cutting mats on large table for cutting
Complimentary coffee and tea will be available in our kitchenette. Please bring a travel mug or sealed cup to avoid any spillage.
Don't feel like bringing your machine with you? Rental machines are available (limited quantity). Please contact our store directly to confirm current pricing and availability.
You may enter via the main door of the store or if someone is in the classroom they can open this door to make it easier to bring your things in.
NOTE: there is time limit for the parking in the Shoppers Drug Mart parking lot.
Cancellation of Classes or Retreats
Should you decide to cancel your registration for an event, class or retreat, you will receive a full credit to a gift card as long as the cancellation is made more than 2 weeks prior to the class date. After that time, you will forfeit your full registration fee.
If you are unable to attend, you do have the option of finding your own replacement participant but Watergirl Quilt Co. will not assist with this or give any fee credit to the original participant. You would be required to email us the name and contact information of your replacement.

| Instructor Bio: | I've been sewing since I was a child. Mostly self taught. I made my first quilt from a night school course in the early seventies. Cotton fabric was hard to find. Poly-cotton was the modern thing and double knit. Wow! We made templates from cereal boxes and cut fabric with scissors. Those were the old days alright. B R C - before rotary cutters. Olfa made our lives easier. And the cotton industry was revitalized. In the early eighties quilt shops began to emerge and patterns to make quilts. I was addicted and remain so to this day. The magic of colour and cloth. I took classes from Jean Boyd and Suzanne Elder. I watched quilting programs on P B S with Eleanor Burns and Kay Wood. I expanded and grew and bought books and fabric and rulers and gadgets and machines. I taught classes and took classes. I keep honing my skills. In 2013 I attended a weeklong workshop with Carol Ann Waugh who introduced this technique of Art Quilting, and I have combined it with methods from Hillary Rice and Margaret Miller to produce unique artistic pieces. I have taught many different classes such as Block of the month for Quilt Thyme, Road trip Wallet and Snappy Slippers for the guild on Zoom Art quilting for Watergirl on Zoom and live. And many more. I like interacting with students and having fun. Especially the 'Art' quilting where you can't make a mistake |
