Introduction to Sashiko



Kirstin Fearon will introduce you to the art of Sashiko which is a Japanese traditional stitching technique and is very easy to learn. It's stitching lines make simple and beautiful patterns on the cloth. 

This course is designed for beginners or novices who want to learn how or improve their hand Sashiko stitching. 

Join Kirstin in the welcoming and relaxed atmosphere of our classroom at Watergirl Quilt Co.  Here is the outline of the class:
- Introductions
- Sashiko terms & resources
- Stitching posture
- Practice stitching and jumps
- Cultural appreciation vs appropriation 
- Loads of practice, stitches and chatting .... and least we forget great companionship

You will leave this course with a good handle know how to stitch and some great ideas of how you can use Sashiko to embellish some of your other creations or already made items.


Required materials:
- sashiko thimble (instructor's recommendation Adjustable Thimble with Metal Plate by Clover)

Kit (included in class fee):
- includes the pre-printed sashiko cloth, 2 sashiko needles and white sashiko thread.  Kit will be distributed at start of class.


Sewing supplies
- scissors or snips
- Paper / notebook and pen / pencil for note taking
- Your regular sewing kit for hand work


Suggested optional materials:
- bandaids to protect fingernails (particularly if they are manicured)
- needle thread (if you need one)

In our classroom at Watergirl Quilt Co, you will be able to enjoy the use of our
- tables; for your comfort, some of our individual sewing tables are mechanical Sit / Stand desks.
- chairs; for added personal comfort, bring a seat cushion if you have one
- iron and ironing boards
- cutting mats on large table for cutting

Complimentary coffee and tea will be available in our kitchenette. Please bring a travel mug or sealed cup to avoid any spillage.


You may enter via the main door of the store or if someone is in the classroom they can open this door to make it easier to bring your things in.

Limited parking spots are available in the parking lot at store level. Please refer to signage to ensure you are NOT parked in a spot that is designated for resident parking. Free long term town parking is available on the river side of our building, to the left. There is no parking allowed on the Water Street. E-chargers are available within the Shoppers Drug Mart parking lo
NOTE: there is time limit for the parking in the Shoppers Drug Mart parking lot

Cancellation of Classes or Retreats
Should you decide to cancel your registration for an event, class or retreat, you will receive a full credit to a gift card as long as the cancellation is made more than 2 weeks prior to the class date. After that time, you will forfeit your full registration fee.

If you are unable to attend, you do have the option of finding your own replacement participant but Watergirl Quilt Co. will not assist with this or give any fee credit to the original participant. You would be required to email us the name and contact information of your replacement.

Instructor: Kirstin Fearon
Instructor Bio: Kirstin Fearon has been quilting for more than 25 years and doing all types of hand work from those early beginnings with hand piecing quilt blocks and hand quilting on a frame. She takes time to study various forms of hand work, and has deepened her knowledge of Sashiko Stitching through a few classes from a Japanese artisan and continues to her practice regularly. Kirstin is an active member of many local and global quilt associations; such as the Ottawa Modern (OMQG) and Common Thread (CTQG); along with Canadian Quilters Association (CQA). Aside from working full time at a day job, Kirstin is a well respected local hand stitcher, quilter and long armer You can follow Kirstin at @kirstinquilts on Instagram
